What is ENERGY STAR®?
You have probably noticed it on household appliances, computers, light bulbs and home heating equipment. ENERGY STAR® indicates that the item it is attached to has been independently tested to ensure that it meets the ENERGY STAR® requirements for energy efficiency and savings.
Who does the certification?
A third party independent consultant reviews the design, conducts an inspection of the home and performs a blower door test to ensure it meets the minimum air changes as required by the program.
Does an ENERGY STAR® Home cost more?
No. All the items that differentiate a Dor-Ann Home from a competitors home are part of the ENERGY STAR® requirements. For example: Fully insulated basements, ENERGY STAR® Furnace and HRV, Seer 13 Air Conditioners, thermostats, compact fluorescent light bulbs, R-50 ceiling insulation. The only thing different is that Dor-Ann enrolls the home with EnerQuality and tests each home for its ENERGY STAR® Certification.
How can you save me $1,000 in energy costs per year?
On the charts below you will see we have modeled four homes. Savings range from $892.82 to $1,347.50. Savings based on standard energy consumption comparisons.
What other benefits does buying an ENERGY STAR® home provide?
Homes with an ENERGY STAR® Certification will qualify for reduced insurance premiums on CMHC mortgages. CMHC offers a 10% premium reduction in the form of cash back directly to the homeowner.
Buyers also benefit from the ability to amortize their mortgage over a 35 year term versus the standard 25 year terms afforded by regular code built homes. The end result is lower monthly costs allowing the buyer to borrow more.
